El’Kashtri went down one floor to his office in the headquarters building. It was a combination office and conference setting, which was perfect for his purposes. He turned up the heat on the pad behind his desk with a command and sent a quick message up to the Exzisa to have Vi’Uku come down and meet him, then he began reviewing the reports from the academy. Before he focused on the problems, he read the overall status reports from Admiral El’Arta. Interestingly, they made no mention of the encounters that would reflect negatively on him or the academy and focused on Serpentes who were excelling in their progression.

He was glad to see that the simulators for the new ship designs would be functional within a day and took a moment to hiss in frustration that the delivery of their new ships had been delayed. Though, he reasoned, even if they had the new ships, they wouldn’t have the crews for them. So, perhaps it was best they were not sitting idle in space without crews. He broadened his review to all the academy locations across the planet. There were a surprising number of humans in various phases of progression. As he drilled down, he noted every campus had its own share of reports of problems with actions taken against humans and even lower castes of Serpentes who were now permitted to serve in functional combat roles. The incidents at the Capital City campus were the most severe by far, though.

A side display lit up to show Commander Vi’Uku approaching the door to his office. Interesting system, he thought. He hissed a command to open the door, and Vi’Uku slid in and snapped to attention, his body perfectly perpendicular to the floor, with his head parallel.

“Rest, Commander,” he said as the door slid closed behind Vi’Uku.

“I came as soon as I received your summons, Fleet Admiral.”

“Thank you, Vi’Uku. It seems there is an issue with the academy, both here and around the planet.”

“The humans?”

“Of course,” he said and gave Vi’Uku a high-level overview, focusing on the problems he wanted to investigate.

“What would you like me to do, Fleet Admiral?”

“I’d like you to pay a visit to the academy, without me. El’Arta is no doubt aware I am on the planet and will be looking into these incidents. He may feel less threatened if you begin the direct investigation on my behalf.”

“Very well. I would like some time to read the reports, of course.”

“Take your time. You may use a station here,” he said, indicating the small conference area. “I would like you to be at the academy tomorrow, though.”

“Thank you, Fleet Admiral. I’m sure that will be sufficient time.”

He watched Vi’Uku as he immediately went to a station and used the small interface pole to manipulate the display, rather than using vocal commands. As he did, he reflected on how far his own perception had come in the past year. He, like most Elapidae, was certain of his superiority.
